Tips and Tactics
Basic Assault Rifle UseIf you see a target at long range, you can switch to single shot mode by selecting your gun again. Many very skilled assault class users are constantly switching their firing modes. If you are entering an area where the probability that you will encounter someone far away is much higher than the probability that you will encounter someone close up, switch to single-fire mode. Single shots at long range can be very effective, especially when zoomed in and using the iron sights. If you are running around the halls and corridors of Karkand or Mashtuur, be sure to have your gun on full-auto or 3 shot burst (depending on what is allowed by the firearm). A lot of choosing your firing mode is common sense and logic. When you switch firing modes in the lower-right corner of your screen, underneath your ammo numbers, you'll see a character signifying either: "A" for full-auto fire, "3" for 3-shot-burst fire, or "1" for single-shot/semi-auto firing.
Basic GL Use
The grenade launcher (GL) should not be used to hit spawn points, heavy armor, or individuals at long ranges. The GL shoots in a parabolic path, so in order to shoot a target straight in front of you with your cross hairs directly on him, you will need to be 20 m away, otherwise you will have to aim the GL up accordingly in order to get more range, I have been able to shoot them up to 150 m away. Do not shoot anyone closer than 5 m away from you. BF2 Patch 1.2 has added a minimum loading distance, basically all this does is make the grenade bounce around a bit before it blows up. If you shoot it at your feet you can still die from it. You can still shoot targets very nearby but keep in mind that the new patch will make it bounce around under 15 m. The GL requires a bit of practice so feel free to run around blowing up bots until you get the hang of it and work out the distances with the gradations on the cross hairs. Aiming the GL is often times something that you just get the hang of after a while. You will begin to Feel where your GL is going to go if you shoot it at a certain angle. Others may find it easier to use the gradated lines on the sight, however I like to look past the aiming reticule. Beginners should figure out quickly that if your target is far away, you should be using the smaller gradations towards the bottom center of the cross hair. If the target is closer, use the bigger lines near the center of the cross hair. You are able to zoom in with the GL as well, however I would recommend using it while zoomed out. Zooming in will cause the gradations to change and they will not be the same as when you are zoomed in which can potentially throw you off in future encounters.
GL vs Vehicles
GLs can easily take out a passing light vehicle such as a hummvee, Vodnik, DPV, or FAV. Smoking APCs are also good targets. While GLs don't do nearly as much damage as AT rockets, they can definitely take out APCs low on health. With the 1.2 patch it is essential that you are 15m away from the vehicle when you launch the GL. Otherwise it will bounce off the vehicle and land on the ground, essentially wasting a perfectly good GL shot. Helicopter Crewmen can often fall victim to your GL as well. When shooting your GL at a Black Hawk or Cow, make sure to aim at the interior of the vehicle as this will often knock out the entire crew (except the pilot).
The GL is ineffective against tanks, APCs, and other vehicles of armor (you would need more then 5 to take down any heavy armor). The Anti-air (e.g., Linebacker) will succumb to 3-4 grenades aimed on the top, but it may be best to save these for infantry or road vehicles unless you are in a squeeze. If a tank or other heavy armor is smoking bad and you know you could take them out in a few hits then go for it, otherwise it isn't worth it since a GL to armor will only bring it down a few bars.
Flash Bangs
The added feature associated with the F2000 is the addition of flash-bang grenades in replace of the smoke grenade for non F2000 users. Flash bangs allow you to blind nearby soldiers rendering them rather helpless. The enemy's screen will go completely white (with a direct hit flash) and even when they begin to regain sight, the enemy still can't see anything on his mini-map (UAV, enemy spots, etc). Flash bangs are perfect for when you are outnumbered and need an advantage. It is also a very nice trick when knifing.
Smoke Grenades
Everyone except for the F2000 has one smoke grenade. Use it to cover an advance on a flag or to conceal yourself from incoming armor. A well-placed smoke grenade may save your entire squad when retreating or attacking a fortified position. Smoke grenades also are very good at distracting the enemy; it keeps them looking in one direction while you approach from another.
Weapon Unlocks
G3 - (semi-auto/full-autoThe G3 is a select fire rifle with the ability to fire in semi-auto and full-auto modes. With only 20 round magazines, the G3 demands a steady hand. With the accuracy adjustments made in the 1.2 patch, the G3 is a very powerful weapon and does quite a bit more damage than the AK-47, AK-101, and M16A2. However, its increased power and accuracy are gained because of the loss of the mounted grenade launcher. On the bright side, you are still given hand grenades. However the range on the G3 is not as great as the other assault rifles, as it is only effective up to medium range, unlike the M16A2 which performs well at longer ranges. Selecting the G3 depends completely on situational and environmental circumstances. Before you decide to use it or not in a certain instance, think about what you may encounter (would a GL be useful? Or would hand grenades be more useful?).
F2000
The F2000 can only be unlocked if you have purchased the Special Forces expansion (a.k.a. Xpack). If you do not want to shell out $30 USD for the expansion pack you can always let a friend who has purchased it to help you out. Have your friend log in with your account and play a few rounds of Special Forces. From then on out you should have the unlocks. The F2000 has a scope but it is not very accurate when shooting full-auto. Longer shots require that you hit the "3" key to switch your rate of fire to semi-auto. The F2000 does have a grenade launcher like every other Assault class gun (except for the G3 Unlock).
